2025 Untethered
I began this series of works by building 'skins' made from collaged material. The collage material has built up from experiments in the studio, scraps of paintings, notes, messages, writing and general memorabilia. Once the skins are ready, they are the surface for me to work on and I have let the images emerge and take shape from there.
Alongside these mixed media collage works on canvas and panel, I have been focusing on the design elements of colour, value and space using acrylic on paper. Working on paper enables me to paint quickly and to explore ideas on a smaller scale in order to take ideas forward to apply to the series. They are works of art in their own right, smaller and more intimate and embedded with a lot of learning.
This collection of abstract coastal scenes combines the moods of the sea with marks on the beach and the shapes and lines sketched from the perspective of standing on the land looking over the water. It is the essence of the sea, sky and nature that inspire me. I have a passion to delve ever-deeper into the subject. It is not just the views, but the sounds and tastes of nature that I am interested in and how these can be translated into paint using mixed media - oils, acrylic, collage, charcoal, natural pigments, pastels, pencils, ink.
Thank you to Annie Worsley for giving me permission to borrow words and phrases from her wonderful, inspiring book 'Windswept' for some of my titles. She paints nature with words.
