About Wendy McCarroll Sandeman artist

What art do I make? I make art inspired by nature in an abstract, expressive style. It begins with an immersion in nature. I walk, look, absorb, record, sketch, make marks, take photographs. Back in the studio I explore shapes, textures, colours and composition. I investigate my subject by exploring ideas in my sketchbook, experimenting with mixed media and analysing as I develop my ideas. I make problems for myself in paint and then resolve them, growing in my skills and developing my unique approach to art making. In the studio, I use mixed media to build up layers of paint, collage and print then draw into and/or scrape these back finding and losing shapes and developing a series of works through the process.
I studied art at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee and the National College of Art (NCAD),Dublin, went on an Erasmus exchange to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and completed a one-year Advanced Painting course at the Leith School of Art. Each type of art training inspired me to explore new materials and methods and it was a wonderful experience learning about and making art in the various creative environments. I am constantly learning and growing. I attend workshops and retreats and spend time with other artists. I enjoy adding new skills to my 'tool-bag' and challenging myself to be ever better at expressing my awe and respect of nature, my curiosity about the world and my love of art materials.
I was born in Dublin and lived in Rome and London before settling in Edinburgh. I had a studio at Coburg Art Studios from 2009 to 2020 and exhibited my work at Open Studios in August and December each year. In 2021, I set up my home studio in East Lothian. Living close to the sea in a vibrant and lively place is my biggest inspiration.
