About Wendy McCarroll Sandeman artist

What art do I make? Initially, I make art inspired by nature in an abstract, expressive style. It begins with an emotional response, a shape, a colour or a structure. I investigate my subject by exploring ideas in my sketchbook, taking notes and photos and spending quiet time thinking about my work. In this way, the subject emerges. In the studio, I use mixed media to build up layers of paint and print then draw into and/or scrape these back finding and losing shapes and developing a body of work through the process.

I studied art at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee and the National College of Art (NCAD),Dublin, went on an Erasmus exchange to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and completed a one-year Advanced Painting course at the Leith School of Art. Each type of art training inspired me to explore new materials and methods and it was a wonderful experience learning about and making art in the various creative environments.

I was born in Dublin and lived in Rome and London before settling in Edinburgh. I had a studio at Coburg Art Studios from 2009 to 2020 and exhibited my work at Open Studios in August and December each year. In 2021, I set up my home studion in Cockenzie, East Lothian. Living close to the sea in a vibrant and lively place is my biggest inspiration.
