Coburg House
I was part of the Coburg community for 11 years and left at the end of July 2020. It is a thriving community of artists and I enjoyed developing my work alongside jewelers, weavers, textile artists, ceramicists, sculptors, sign-writers, designers, illustrators, printmakers and painters. It was an amazing place to be part of and be sure to visit for Open Studios (usually twice a year around August and Dec).
Leith School of Art
Before getting into Art College, I did a portfolio preparation course at the LSA with Mark and Lottie Cheverton. They were wonderful and inspiring teachers and mentors and fostered a supportive but challenging creative atmosphere in which I thrived. I returned to the LSA many years later to do a Painting course and again found it to be supportive and engaging. I formed lasting friendships with fellow-painters and a group of us moved into Coburg together after completing the course.
National College of Art and Design, Dublin
NCAD is in the heart of Dublin and I adored this place. I would start at 9am and not leave the building until 9pm. I remember the energy and the excitement of being there. We worked hard and played hard. The Clock pub next door was a great way to end the day with students from the art college putting on elaborate karaoke performances in full costume and pints of Guinness lined up waiting to be sipped slowly while watching the entertainment.
St Ives School of Painting
There is nothing nicer than combining a holiday with some art classes. The St Ives School of Painting is a wonderful old building steeped in history with breath-taking views and a fantastic range of courses. Highly recommended for getting your art mojo back and nurturing your creative soul.
Edinburgh Printmakers
They now have a lovely new building complete with a cafe and gallery space. I was a member when they had their workshop on Union Street. Love that all their sprawling plants have moved with them.
Art2Life
Nicholas Wilton, the founder of Art2life is one of those people with amazing energy who can come up with endless creative ideas. He is a mentor to many and his courses and programmes are so inspiring. Feel the sunshine all the way from California.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art
I did my Foundation year at Duncan of Jordanstone. The start of my year there was tinged with sadness because of the tragic news that Lottie and Mark Cheverton had been killed in a car crash coming back from their summer holiday. I found it hard to comprehend that the mentors who had started me on the path to Art College were no longer there.
I remember the clear and insightful instruction at the College of Art and the experience of trying out printmaking, painting and sculpture with a view to deciding which area to align myself to. I do think of it as a melancholy year though. After the sad start, I somehow never felt settled and decided that a transfer to my hometown of Dublin would help.
Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design
While I was at NCAD in Dublin, we had a number of exchange students from Europe who came for a term to learn a specific skill. This gave me the idea to go to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to spend some time in the Printmaking Department. I stayed in Oxfordshire and took the bus to London to study. The days were long but busy and educational. I was able to observe what other students were doing and to start thinking about the body of work I would do for the degree show when I returned to NCAD.
Galleria Borghese
After I left school and before I went to Art College, I spent a number of years living in Rome. It felt like living in a museum. Beautiful, perfect art all around me. I used to sketch the beautiful sculptures and I visited the many galleries and museums regularly while I lived there. One of my favourite places was the gallery and gardens of Villa Borghese. I would definitely recommend living in a beautiful 'art museum' though it was daunting for an aspiring artist to be surrounded by such perfection.
